RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, James Brady has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 73; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, James Brady was a former White House Press Secretary and the loving husband of Sarah; and

WHEREAS, James Brady was the much-adored father of Scott and Melissa to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, Born in downstate Centralia, James Brady earned a degree in political science from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and worked in both the private sector and government; and

WHEREAS, James Brady served on the staff of Illinois Senator Everett Dirksen and later became spokesperson for former Texas Governor John Connally; and

WHEREAS, Affectionately known as "Bear," James Brady was named White House Press Secretary by President Ronald Reagan in 1981; and

WHEREAS, Early in his White House tenure, James Brady was shot in the head during an assassination attempt on President Reagan by John Hinckley as the President exited an event at the Washington Hilton Hotel; and

WHEREAS, Following that fateful day, James Brady tirelessly worked along with his wife as a crusader for gun control; and

WHEREAS, James and Sarah Brady's steadfast efforts led to passage of the landmark Brady Act in 1993 which required licensed gun dealers to conduct background checks; and

WHEREAS, The perseverance, sacrifice and dedication of James Brady serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared James Brady to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

WHEREAS, James Brady will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, James Brady imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, the...
