MEMORIAL RESOLUTION
 
WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that members of this Chamber learned of the death of Winifred Duffy, nee Monahan, on December 11, 2014 at the age of seventy-nine; and
 
WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of her passing by The Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman of the 39th Ward; and
 
WHEREAS, Born on October 24, 1935, Winnie was the beloved wife of forty-three years to John Duffy; loving mother of Michael (Monica), Maura and Katherine (Jessica); devoted grandmother of Jack, Lucia, Leif and Atticus; dear sister of Kay, Sean, Jim, Eileen, Maura, Michael, Breda, Phylis and Paddy; treasured aunt of many nieces and nephews, cousins and countless friends in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Australia, Spain and America. Winnie leaves a legacy of faith, dignity and love; and
 
WHEREAS, Winifred was born in County Kilkenny, Ireland to Seamus Monahan, the town's Mayor, and his wife Bridget. Winnie had remarkable courage and at age nineteen she set sail for America, living with her paternal Aunt Dell and Uncle Martin Gibbons, near her other Aunt Mary and Uncle John Fleming. The Gibbons' and the Fleming's were Winnie's loving family in Chicago; and
 
WHEREAS, An active and vital member of her community, Winnie touched the lives of all who knew her through her kindness, her generosity, her heart and her spirit. She will be deeply missed, but the memory of her character, intelligence and compassion will live on in those who knew and loved her, now, therefore,
 
Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago gathered here this twenty-first day of January 2015, do hereby express our sorrow on the death of Winifred Duffy and express to her family and friends our deepest sympathy; and
 
Be It Further Resolved, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Winifred Duffy as a token of our honor, gratitude, and respect.
