RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Captain John V. Sheardown has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 88; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Captain John V. Sheardown was the loving and devoted husband of Zena; and
WHEREAS, Captain John V. Sheardown was the much-adored father of Robin. John and the late Jackie to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, A proud veteran of World War IT, Captain John V. Sheardown spent forty-eight years of his life in service to Canada, including a distinguished twenty-seven year career in the Canadian Foreign Service; and
WHEREAS, Captain John V. Sheardown was serving as the top immigration official for the Canadian Embassy in Tehran at the time ofthe Iranian revolution of 1979; and
WHEREAS, Captain John V. Sheardown was awarded the Order of Canada in 1980 for his crucial role in the bold rescue of six American diplomats from Tehran; and
WHEREAS, Captain John V. Sheardown was known for his "quiet but unyielding resolve that made him a natural leader in a crisis"; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and heroism of Captain John Sheardown serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Captain John Sheardown to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget: and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Captain John V. Sheardown imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we. the Mayor and the members ofthe Chicago City Council, assembled this seventeenth day of January, 2013, do hereby commemorate Captain John V. Sheardown for his grace-tilled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
