RESOLUTION

WHEREAS. God in His Infinite Wisdom peacefully ushered Gladstone John (Joseph) Sanders, a beloved patriarch, husband and humble citizen, to his eternal reward on August 22, 2020; and

WHERERAS, This august body has been informed of Gladstone Sanders' passing by the Honorable Carrie M. Austin, Alderman of the 34th Ward; and

WHEREAS, Born on November 28, 1937 to the union of Gladstone Sanders, Sr. and Ida McGuire, Gladstone will long be remembered for his distinctly infectious smile. A native New Orleanian growing up in the church, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. He embraced service as an altar boy, cherishing his role of supporting the priesthood during mass; and

WHEREAS, Gladstone attended the well-respected Holy Rosary Boarding School, and continued on to higher learning, receiving a bachelor's degree from Southern University in Baton Rouge; and

WHEREAS, He initiated his professional vocation as a Special Education teacher in the Chicago Public School system. Gladstone would move on to the Boys & Girls Club of Chicago—Henry Horner Club, where he met his "help meet," Tina Bishop. His career at the B&GCC would span more than 20 years, before moving to academia work, accepting employment at the City Colleges of Chicago, before retiring and starting his own foundation, Phalanx Family Services in November of 2002. As founder and president, Phalanx would give his community members access to a variety of health and employment services, including training and job placement, financial supports and reentry for returning residents, to name a few. Gladstone provided a strong leadership, dedication and commitment to ensuring his groundwork's longevity, even beyond his physical retirement as president in 2015. The tenets of Phalanx's outreach continue to be sown to date in authentic love and humanity for his community's people; and
