RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, the City of Chicago is proud of its honorable, brave, and selfless first responders and members of our nation's military, who through their heroic service reveal the essence of our great city; and
WHEREAS, George Rabiela, a retired Chicago firefighter, in cooperation with the Chicago Police Department, Chicago Fire Department and Warrior Events has commissioned artwork to honor Chicago's first responders and members of our nation's armed forces; and
WHEREAS, the commissioned artwork consists of three sculpture designs in honor of the members of the Chicago Police Department, the Chicago Fire Department, and the members of the United States' military; and
WHEREAS, the commissioned sculptures would depict a Chicago firefighter, a police officer, and a member of our nation's armed forces carrying Superman over his shoulder; and
WHEREAS, the words "even Superman needs a hero" would be engraved in the sculptures; and
WHEREAS, the sculptures would be awarded to first responders and members of the armed forces on an ongoing basis; and
WHEREAS, the artwork is intended to honor the valor, bravery, and heroism of the men and women who serve in our police and fire departments and on behalf of our country, many of whom have made the ultimate sacrifice; and
WHEREAS, the sculptures would also help raise funds for the families of our fallen heroes; and
WHEREAS, it is believed that the Superman character is a protected form of intellectual property under both copyrights and trademarks held by DC Comics; and
WHEREAS, the City of Chicago supports these efforts to honor our brave and selfless first responders and the members of the military; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Chicago does hereby urge DC Comics to grant permission to use Superman in the aforementioned commissioned sculptures fafpie benefit of our/first responders and members of our nation's armed forces. / / /
