RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Richard N. Goodwin has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 86; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, An author, playwright and political advisor, Richard N. Goodwin was the loving husband of Doris Kearns Goodwin ; and
WHEREAS, Richard N. Goodwin was the much-adored father of Richard, Michael and Joseph and the grandfather of two to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Richard N. Goodwin was a renowned speechwriter who helped craft many of President Lyndon B. Johnson's major addresses on civil rights and the "Great Society" and Senator Robert F. Kennedy's "Ripples of Hope" address; and
WHEREAS, Richard N. Goodwin resigned from the White House in 1966 and joined the anti-war movement; and
WHEREAS, Richard N. Goodwin was with Senator Robert F. Kennedy during his presidential campaign when he was assassinated in 1968 in Los Angeles; and
WHEREAS, Richard N. Goodwin helped craft Vice President Al Gore's presidential concession speech in 2000; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Richard N. Goodwin serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Richard N. Goodwin was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Richard N. Goodwin imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-seventh day of June, 2018, do hereby commemorate Richard N. Goodwin for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Richard N. Go/jdwin.
