Title: Recognition extended to Lee Dunlap on military service member of U.S, Navy during World War II

RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, Lee Dunlap served his country with distinction as a member of the United States Navy during World War II; and

 

WHEREAS, Lee Dunlap was one of the first 277 African-American sailors to join the United States Navy after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor; and

 

WHEREAS, Out of that pioneering class, 222 successfully completed the training on Sept. 3,1942 and of f those graduates, 102 including Dunlap, were chosen to continue with specialized training; and

 

WHEREAS, Lee Dunlap was sent to Hampton Roads, Virginia where he studied to become an Electrician Mate "A" and was selected as the "honorman" of his class; and

 

WHEREAS, Lee Dunlap was subsequently promoted to Electrician Mate 3 and was assigned to a minesweeper based out of Cape May, New Jersey; and

 

WHEREAS, Lee Dunlap will be honored at a special celebration on the eve of Veteran's Day at Wintrust's Grand Banking Hall, 231 South La Salle Street, Chicago, Illinois; and

 

WHEREAS, Lee Dunlap is truly an example of what journalist Tom Brokaw called "Our Greatest Generation;" and

 

WHEREAS, Lee Dunlap is exceedingly worthy of our highest admiration and esteem; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this ninth day of November, 2016 do hereby express our sincere appreciation to Lee Dunlap for his military service; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Lee Dunlap.
