RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Caroline Kennedy, the last surviving child of the late President John F. Kennedy, has been confirmed by the Senate as Ambassador to Japan; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Caroline Kennedy earned a bachelor's degree from Radcliffe College at Harvard University and a J.D. from Columbia Law School; and
WHEREAS, Caroline Kennedy serves on the boards of several not-for-profit agencies and has been active in celebrating and perpetuating her family's rich legacy of political and public engagement; and
WHEREAS, A respected attorney, writer, and editor, Caroline Kennedy has authored two books on civil liberties with Ellen Alderman: In Our Defense: The Bill of Rights In Action and The Right to Privacy; and
WHEREAS, The third generation of her family to serve in the U.S. Diplomatic Corps, Caroline Kennedy follows in the footsteps of her grandfather, Joseph P. Kennedy, Ambassador to the United Kingdom under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and her aunt, Jean Kennedy Smith, Ambassador to Ireland under President William J. Clinton; and
WHEREAS, Caroline Kennedy is the first woman to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to Japan; and
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirteenth day of November, 2013, do hereby commend Caroline Kennedy for her commitment to public service and send our best wishes for much success in her new position; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Caroline Kennedy.
