RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Dr. Leon Lederman has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 96; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Leon Lederman was a Nobel Prize-winning physicist and the loving husband for 37 years of Ellen; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Leon Lederman was the much-adored father of Rena, Jesse and Rachel to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Leon Lederman rose to prominence as a researcher and in the early 1960s proposed the idea for the National Accelerator Laboratory which eventually became Fermilab; and

WHEREAS, From 1978 to 1989 Dr. Leon Lederman was the Director of Fermilab in Batavia and helped to create the Illinois Math and Science Academy in Aurora; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Leon Lederman placed an emphasis on educating young people in science and math and established the Saturday Morning Physics Program which has taught students from across Chicago for decades about particle physics with the help of prominent scientists; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Leon Lederman was also active in the professional development of primary school teachers in Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Leon Lederman was a Pritzker Professor of Science at the Illinois Institute of Technology and Chairman of the State of Illinois Governor's Science Advisory Committee; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Dr. Leon Lederman serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Leon Lederman was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Dr. Leon Lederman imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
