RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Reubin Askew has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 85; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Reubin Askew was the 37th Governor of the State of Florida and the loving husband of Donna Lou, nee Harper; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Reubin Askew was the much-adored father of two children to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Reubin Askew served as Crovernor from 1971 to 1979 and during his two terms in office earned a reputation as a progressive and effective lawmaker; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Reubin Askew fought for tax reform and financial transparency for public officials; and
 
WHEREAS, A champion of civil rights, the Honorable Reubin Askew integrated the Florida Highway Patrol and appointed Florida's first African-American Supreme Court Justice; and
 
WHEREAS, A veteran of the Korean War, the Honorable Reubin Askew served in the Florida House of Representatives and State Senate; and
 
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Reubin Askew serve as an example to all; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Reubin Askew will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
 
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable Reubin Askew imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this second day of April, 2014, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Reubin Askew for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
