RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Chicago Police Department Officers Hector Fuentes and Peter Gurskis are being hailed as heroes for rescuing two men from a fiery car wreck in the Gage Park community early on April 3, 2015; and
WHEREAS, Officer Fuentes and Gurskis, partners for 15 years, were on routine patrol in the 5700 block of South Kedzie Avenue around 1:15 a.m. when they witnessed a Chevy Aveo headed north on Kedzie veer across the center line and collide head-on with an oncoming truck; and
WHEREAS, The impact was so severe that the Chevy burst into flames and the crash pinned both driver and passenger inside the front ofthe mangled vehicle; and
WHEREAS, Officer Fuentes and Gurskis concluded that there was not enough time to wait for the fire department to arrive on the scene and immediately sprang into action; and
WHEREAS, Officer Fuentes and Gurskis first freed the driver's legs and dragged him to safety; and
WHEREAS, With help from fellow officers who arrived on the scene, Officers Fuentes and Gurskis then pulled the second occupant from the wreckage; and
WHEREAS, Both victims were transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital for treatment, while the driver of the truck did not sustain serious injury; and
WHEREAS, If not for the courage, training and decisive actions of Officers Fuentes and Gurskis, both occupants of the burning vehicle may have never been extricated in a timely fashion at the accident scene; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fifteenth day of April, 2015, do hereby congratulate Officers Hector Fuentes and Peter Gurskis on their heroic and lifesaving actions; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Officers Hector Fuentes and Peter Gurskis.
