WHEREAS, Hector Hernandez was called to his final resting place; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed body has been notified of Hector Hernandez's death by the Honorable Aldermen Roberto Maldonado ofthe 26th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Hector Hernandez grew up in New York City before moving to Chicago to pursue his dream of being a police officer; and
WHEREAS, Hector Hernandez began his illustrious career in the Chicago Police Department in 1961. He began as a patrolman, and was promoted to detective, sergeant, lieutenant, and District Commander. He retired as Commander of the 14th District; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Hernandez was a trailblazer in the Chicago Police Department. He was the first Puerto Rican sergeant, lieutenant and Commander; and
WHEREAS, Hector Hernandez received numerous commendations and recognitions from Police Superintendents and Mayor Richard J. Daley for his exemplary work in the Chicago Police Department; and
WHEREAS, Hector Hernandez worked tirelessly with at-risk youth in a police-sponsored baseball league. His tireless work led to 400 youth participating annually in a worthwhile activity rather than potentially spending time in gangs and engaging in illegal activity; and
WHEREAS, Hector was married and had four incredibly successful children, three daughters and a son. He was blessed with eight wonderful grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Hernandez was an individual of great integrity and accomplishments who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives and friends. The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Hector Hernandez serves as an example to all; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago gathered here this twenty-second day of June, 2016, do hereby express our sorrow on the passing of Hector Hernandez and extend to his family our sincere condolences; and
