RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Marion Barry has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 78; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Marion Barry was a former four-term Mayor of the District of Columbia and the loving husband of Cora; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Marion Barry was the much-adored father of Marion Christopher to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, The son of a sharecropper, the Honorable Marion Barry was born in Itta Bena, Mississippi and raised in Memphis, Tennessee; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Marion Barry became active in the civil rights movement during the 1960s and was named the first Chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC); and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Marion Barry's leadership in the movement brought him to Washington, D.C., where he was the first prominent civil rights advocate to become chief executive of a major city; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Marion Barry served as Mayor from 1979 to 1991 and from 1995 to 1999; and
WHEREAS, A popular and influential political leader, the Honorable Marion Barry previously served three terms as a member of the Council of the District of Columbia; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Marion Barry serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Marion Barry will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable Marion Barry imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this tenth day of December, 2014, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Marion Barry for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
