RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Helen Burns Jackson has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 92; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A longtime resident of Greenville, South Carolina, Helen Burns Jackson was the mother of the Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, the renowned civil rights leader; and
WHEREAS, Helen Burns Jackson was a talented musician and an active member of her church; and
WHEREAS, Born in 1923, Helen Burns Jackson worked as a cosmetologist and generously provided her services for free to those who could not afford to pay them; and
WHEREAS, A leading member of her community, Helen Burns Jackson assisted neighbors who could not read or write fill out government paperwork; and
WHEREAS, Helen Burns Jackson's strong will, perseverance and activism inspired the Reverend Jesse L. Jackson to become a leader in the civil rights movement; and
WHEREAS, The Reverend Jesse L. Jackson was keenly supported by his mother as he went on to twice run for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States and receive a Presidential Medal of Freedom; and
WHEREAS, Helen Burns Jackson was also exceedingly proud of her younger son, Charles "Chuck" Jackson, a Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter credited with launching Natalie Cole's career; and
WHEREAS, The goodness, sacrifice and dedication of Helen Burns Jackson serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Her love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Helen Burns Jackson to her family members, friends and all who knew her, and enabled her to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Helen Burns Jackson will be dearly, missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Helen Burns Jackson imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
