TO THE HONORABLE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO
Ladies and Gentlemen:
I transmit herewith a resolution honoring the life and memory of Kathryn Louise Dowell. Your favorable consideration of this resolution will be appreciated.
RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Members of this Chamber learned with great sadness that Kathryn "Kay" L. Dowell, the mother of our friend and colleague, 3rd Ward Alderman Patricia Dowell, passed away on January 26, 2011; and
WHEREAS, Born Kathryn McFarland in Norristown, Pennsylvania, to Samuel and Mary McFarland, Mrs. Dowell moved with her family at an early age to Jamaica, New York; and
WHEREAS, After completing her grammar and high school education in Jamaica, New York, Mrs. Dowell decided to pursue a career in nursing and graduated with honors from New York City Community College and Long Island University; and
WHEREAS, A dedicated nurse renowned for her professionalism and compassion, Mrs. Dowell worked for more than 30 years for the New York City Health Department before she retired and moved to Pikesville, Maryland, where she joined the Union Bethel A.M.E. Church and served in the Nurse's Guild; and
WHEREAS, In July 1995, Mrs. Dowell moved to Illinois to be near her family, and she lived a virtuous life in devotion to Christ as a member of the Daniel Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, where she gave selflessly of her time to the Health Ministry and Missionary Society, and served as its President for one and one-half years; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Dowell was a proud member of the Chi Eta Phi Sorority, a professional association of registered and student nurses of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds, started in 1932 at Howard University Hospital to elevate the plane of nursing and increase interest in the profession; and
