CONGRATULATIONS TO ALESSANDRO VOLT A ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ON WINNING FIVE MEDALS AT THE 2015 ILLINOIS SCIENCE OLYMPIAD
WHEREAS, Alessandro Volta Elementary School Science Olympiad Team lived up to its name-The Thunderbolts- as it roared past the competition at the 2015 Illinois Science Olympiad championships held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and
WHEREAS, Volta won five medals, placing in robotics, entomology, solar systems, bridge building and elastic launch gliders. In the robotics competition, known as Robo-Cross, seventh-graders Brennan Idor and Jennifer Calderon placed second, snagging the highest award for Volta during the meet; and
WHEREAS, Volta is a neighborhood school in Albany Park, Chicago's most diverse community. Ninety percent of Volta's students belong to minority groups, and ninety-six percent of its students come from low income families. Yet, that didn't stop teachers and students from forming a Science Olympiad club, an extracurricular opportunity for sixth to eight grade students to compete in science, problem solving and critical thinking. The Science Olympiad Team reflects the diversity of the . school as a whole; and
WHEREAS, This year, the Volta Elementary School "Thunderbolts" brought home over 50 medals and awards from regionals as well as placing second place, right behind Lane Tech's High School academic center; and
WHEREAS, the Thunderbolts inspired themselves and their classmates to dream big and study hard, by proving that where you come from is not as important as where you go; and
WHEREAS, the eighth grade members of the Volta Thunderbolts Science Olympiad Team are Raymond Diaz, Maheboob Khatri, Jason Munoz, Hemangi Patel, Jahnavi Patel, Jacqueline Patino, and Sebastian Tovar. The seventh grade members are Jennifer Calderon, Presley Dang, Fatoumata Dioubote, Brennan Idor, Michelle Luu, Edgar Morales, Smit Raval, and Stephani Rodriguez.
