MEMORIAL RESOLUTION
TO THE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF CHICAGO:
WHEREAS, Irving M. King was born on July 22, 1931 in Ashland, Virginia and;
Whereas, Irving M. King earned his B.S. in English with honors from Hampton Institute (now Hampton University), was awarded a fellowship to attend Yale University Law School where he attended and earned his LL.B from Yale in 1958 and;
Whereas, Irving M. King joined the prominent Chicago labor law firm that would bear his name, Cotton, Watt, Jones and King and;
Whereas, the legal career of Irving M. King spanned more than five decades in which he achieved several significant victories in the courts, before the National Labor Relations Board, and at the bargaining table and;
Whereas, Irving M. King was the lead council in a landmark 1975 case, Sprogis v. United Air Lines, Inc., in which the court struck down on sex discrimination grounds the airline's "no marriage" rule that required flight attendants to resign or be fired if they got married and;
Whereas Irving M. King also contributed his legal skills on a volunteer basis to many worthy causes, including representing unlawfully detained civil rights demonstrators and serving as pro bono legal counsel to famed civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer;
WHEREAS, Over the years of his life, Irving M. King was a devoted husband and father, touching the lives of his devoted family and many who cherish his memory and acknowledge his contributions and;
WHEREAS, This august body has been informed of the passing of Irving M. King by the Honorable Leslie A. Hairston, Alderman of the 5 th Ward; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City of Chicago City Council, assembled here do hereby express our sincerest sorrow upon the passing of Irving M. King and extend our deepest condolences to his many family members and friends.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to the family of Irving M. King.
