RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Thomas M. Hanley has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 90; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, Thomas M. Hanley was a widely admired member of the law enforcement community and the loving husband of Charlotte, nee Rester; and

WHEREAS, Thomas M. Hanley was the much-adored father of Sheila and the grandfather of three to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, The son of Irish immigrants, Thomas M. Hanley was born to the late Thomas from Tipperary and Mary, nee Hickey, from Limerick; and

WHEREAS, Thomas M. Hanley was the dear and devoted brother of the late Reverend John, O.S.M., and Mary C; and

WHEREAS, Raised in Our Lady of Sorrows Parish on the West Side, Thomas M. Hanley attended St. Philip Catholic High School and worked as a mechanic for a street car company; and

WHEREAS, During World War II, Thomas M. Hanley was a
member of the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, Following his honorable discharge from the military, Thomas M. Hanley joined the Chicago Police Department where he served in the Intelligence Division, Youth Division and Neighborhood Relations Division; and

WHEREAS, Thomas M. Hanley was promoted to the rank of Captain and commanded the Town Hall Police District; and

WHEREAS, After his retirement from the Chicago Police Department in 1987, Thomas M. Hanley worked for the Cook County Sheriffs Department; and

WHEREAS, Throughout his long and illustrious career, Thomas M. Hanley upheld the highest and most noble traditions of the law enforcement community; and

WHEREAS, A devout Catholic who was known for his kindness and generosity, Thomas M. Hanley regularly donated to causes to support poor children; and

WHEREAS, Thomas M. Hanley was a valued member of the Knights of Columbus and the Merton Society; and
