WHEREAS, On Wednesday, March 9, 2011, the Almighty God, in his infinite wisdom called to his eternal paradise, Rev. Walter F. McNicholas ; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this by 18th Ward Alderman Lona Lane; and
WHEREAS, Rev. McNicholas was born April 11, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois, he professed Vows as an Augustinian on December 13, 1947 and was ordained to priesthood on October 26,1952; and
WHEREAS, Rev. McNicholas earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Villanova University in 1949. He studied theology in Rome, earning a bachelor's degree in sacred theology in 1952 and a master's degree two years later. He later studied psychology at DePaul and Chicago State universities. He also served in the U.S. Navy; and
WHEREAS, Rev. McNicholas' 58 year ministry included stops at numerous schools and parishes throughout the Midwest, he was a legend at St. Rita High School. As a St. Rita graduate, Rev. McNicholas spent nearly half of his career at the high school. He served the school during much ofthe 1950's and 1960's and returned to his alma matter in 1983, serving as a teacher, guidance counselor, vocations director and the alumni association chaplain.
WHEREAS, "Father McNic", as he was affectionately known by generations of St. Rita students, was frequently sought out to discuss personal issues or for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, he knew every kid by name. Whenever there was a death in the family of any St. Rita student, Rev. McNicholas would attend the wake; and
WHEREAS, Rev McNicholas is survived by two sisters, Rosemary Morris and Helen Marszalek; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and members ofthe City Council ofthe City of Chicago, gathered here in assembly this thirteenth day of April, 2011 A.D do hereby express our sorrow on the passing of Rev. Walter F. McNicholas and extend to his family and friends our deepest sympathy; and
