Resolution

Whereas, Rabbi Herman Schaalman passed away on January 31, 2017; and

Whereas, Rabbi Schaalman has been active in the Edgewater community since 1956; and

Whereas, Rabbi Schaalman led the Emanuel Congregation synagogue from 1956-1986; and

Whereas, Rabbi Schaalman helped to form the interfaith organization Edgewater Community Religious Association, leading to understanding between religions; and

Whereas, Rabbi Schaalman served as a past president of the Council of Religious Leaders of Chicago; and

Whereas, as a Holocaust survivor, Rabbi Schaalman understood the importance of bringing together people of different faiths, races, and backgrounds in order to create peace within our community and within this city through understanding.

Now be it resolved, that the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled on this 22^nd day of February, 2017, do hereby honor Rabbi Herman Schaalman for his contributions to the community.

Be it further resolved, that a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Rabbi Schaalman's family and the Emanuel Congregation.
