WHEREAS, Dr. Hyo Hyun Byun (Sal), passed away on January 23, 2016; and rn""' 3
WHEREAS, This august body has been informed of his death by the Honorable Margaret Laurin^ Alderman of the 39th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Byun was born on February 28, 1929 in Seoul, Korea; and received his Doctor of Medicine from one of Korea's oldest and most prestigious university, Yonsei University, in 1950, and;
WHEREAS, After graduation, Dr. Byun served in the ROK Army Medical Corps during the Korean War, receiving the Hwa-Rang Medal of Distinguished Military Services from Republic of Korea Military. He moved to Chicago in 1956 to complete his residency in Radiology and fellowship in Radiation Therapy and Nuclear Medicine at Cook County Hospital; and
WHEREAS, Since beginning his medical career in 1960, Dr. Byun held a variety of distinguished positions, including as Director of Nuclear Medicine at Cook County Hospital, Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, and Illinois Masonic Medical Center; Attending Physician at Edward Vines Jr. VA Hospital; Chairman ofthe Department of Radiology at Edgewater Hospital; and Vice Chairman ofthe University of Chicago Department of Radiology. Upon retirement, Dr. Byun was Manager of Lake Bluff Health Care Centre skilled-care nursing facility; and
WHEREAS, Despite his numerous professional commitments, Dr. Byun made it a priority to serve the Korean-American community in Chicago. Dr. Byun served as President of the Korean-American Association of Chicago, President ofthe Advisory Council on Peaceful Unification of Korea Midwest Chapter in the United State, as a member of the Board of Directors of the Midwest Chapter of Korean Veterans Association in United States, and President of Korean Radiologists in the United States; and
