RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Tony de Brum has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 72; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Tony de Brum was the loving and devoted husband of Rosalie; and
WHEREAS, Tony de Brum was the much-adored father of Doreen, Dolores and Sallyann to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Tony de Brum was the much-adored grandfather of ten and great-grandfather of five; and
WHEREAS, Tony de Brum served as the Minister of Education, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Minister in Assistant of the Marshall Islands; and
WHEREAS, Tony de Brum was a leading advocate for the landmark Paris Agreement and an internationally recognized voice in the fight against climate change; and
WHEREAS, Tony de Brum was one of the first Marshallese to attend college and was a main participant in the negotiations to secure the nation's compact of free association with the United States and membership in the United Nations; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Tony de Brum serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Tony de Brum to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Tony de Brum imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixth day of September, 2017, do hereby commemorate Tony de Brum for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Tony de Brum.
