SALUTE TO THE CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION OF SACRED HEART CHURCH
WHEREAS, Sacred Heart Church, an iconic Roman Catholic parish in this city's Veteran's Park Neighborhood, is celebrating its centennial year; and
WHEREAS, Sacred Heart Church was first founded as a predominantly Croatian parish. The cornerstone of the church building was laid August 31, 1913. Rev. Ivan A. Stipanvic, the first pastor, celebrated Midnight Mass in the new church on Christmas of that year; and
WHEREAS, Under Father Stipanvic's administration, a school opened with the Sisters of St. Francis of Christ The King and the new combination church and school was formally dedicated by Archbishop James E. Quigley on May 17, 1914; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the ensuing years, Sacred Heart Church was source of inspiration and succor to its parishioners. The constantly growing congregation needed a new and more appropriate edifice by the 1960's. Property was added and the groundbreaking took place January 6, 1963. The following May, in conjunction with the celebration of Sacred Heart's Golden Jubilee, the blessing ofthe cornerstone took place; and
WHEREAS, Today the parish of Sacred Heart has over 600 families and a congregation that still includes families of Croatian descent who have been in the South Chicago area for decades as well as Polish and Hispanic families who are more recent arrivals to the neighborhood.
WHEREAS, The Honorable John A. Pope, Alderman ofthe 10lh Ward where Sacred Heart Church is located, has apprised this august body of this auspicious milestone in this noteworthy history of this parish, now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED that we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this 5"' Day of June, 2013, A.D., do hereby salute the pastor and parishioners of Sacred Heart Church in celebration of its 100th Anniversary and express our most fervent wishes for the parish's continuing success and inspiration.
