RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, One of the largest immigrant groups to first call Chicago their new home were the Poles, who began settling in Chicago during the 1850s and the 1860's; and
WHEREAS, For decades, residents of Powisle Dabrowskie, Poland have immigrated to the United States and raised their families. The Polish community has become an integral part of the identity of the City of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, Powisle Dabrowskie is located in the Malopolska Region, in southeastern Poland. One of the warmest areas of Malopolska, Powisle Dabrowskie features the most breathtaking mountain rivers in Poland, the Dunajec and Vistula rivers. The area is also known for its rolling hilly rises and picturesque landscapes; and
WHEREAS, Powisle Dabrowskie is also home to many attractions, including one of Poland's best technical museums, the Museum of Highways in Szczucin, which stores historical engineering equipment and panoramas of the beautiful roadways in Poland. It is also home to a 19th century restored synagogue, which currently serves at the Center of Cultures Meeting Place in Dabrowa Tarnowska. Finally, the famous "painted village" of Zalipie in the Olesno Municipality is unique, full of fantastic painted cottages with different themes, colorful flowers, and folk ornaments; and
WHEREAS, Many artists and distinguished individuals called the area home, including Major Henry Sucharski, Joseph Zaluski, Jacob Bojko, Stefania Lacka, Felix Konopka, Jan Wnek and . Maria Kozaczkowa; and
WHEREAS, Powisle Dabrowskie has a close relationship with the City of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, Chicago is proud to be the home to many immigrants of Polish descent, especially those from the beautiful Powisle Dabrowskie region which contributes to the rich history of the world, now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this twenty-second day of February, 2017, do hereby recognize the tremendous contributions of the Powisle Dabrows...
