MEMORIAL RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that members of this Chamber learned of the death of William Danforth Mulliken on July 17, 2014, at the age of seventy-four; and

WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of his passing by The Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman of the 39th Ward; and

WHEREAS, William is survived by his beloved wife, Lorna Filippini-Mulliken; loving and devoted father of Cynthia (Anthony) Lazzara, Julia (Ted) DeNapoli, and David (Alison Corning); doting grandfather of Forrest, Judson, William, Matthew, Finn and Chase; cherished brother of Sallie Olsen and John; treasured friends who had the pleasure of knowing him. William leaves a legacy of faith, dignity, love and five-thousand books; and

WHEREAS, William, loving son of Jean Forrest and Wallace Mulliken was born on August 27, 1939 in Urbana, Illinois where he attended Champaign High School and graduated from Miami of Ohio in 1961 and received a law degree from Harvard in 1964; retiring as Senior Vice President and General Counsel of ChemCentral Corporation; and

WHEREAS, William, a 1960 Rome Olympics Gold Medalist, 200-meter Breaststroke, was dedicated to swimming, theatre and learning. With his outgoing and curious nature he became an ambassador for the things he loved, founding Big Shoulders, "the world's most architecturally significant open water swim" held in Lake Michigan off Oak Street Beach, in 1991 and chaired a Capital Campaign for the Library at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio; and

WHEREAS, William was an active and vital member of his community who touched the lives of all who knew him through his kindness, generosity, heart and spirit, he will be deeply missed, but the memory of his character, intelligence and compassion will live on in those who knew and loved him; now, therefore,
