RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING LULA MAE WASHINGTON ON HER 90™ BIRTHDAY
WHEREAS, It is with immense pleasure that the Chicago City Council is hereby informed of the observance of Lula Mae Washington's 90th Birthday; and
WHEREAS, Lula Mae Washington, an enthusiastic and much loved 34th Ward resident of Chicago, celebrated her auspicious milestone with family, friends and community on Sunday, August 13, 2017; and
WHEREAS, Lula Mae Washington was born on August 14, 1927, in Hazlehurst, Mississippi. She worked on a farm gleaning cotton; and
WHEREAS, In 1954, Lula Mae and her three children moved to 43rd Street in Chicago, and then to 47th Street and St. Lawrence Avenue. In 1971, she settled in the Roseland community on 107th and Wentworth Avenue; and
WHEREAS, In the 1980s, Lula Mae and her family opened a candy store so the neighborhood children could have a place to go after school. This store became a local meeting place and landmark for over 30 years. "Miss Washington", as she was known, touched the lives of many during her years at the store; and
WHEREAS, Lula Mae, an upstanding citizen, did an interview with "Time" magazine in regard to the untimely death and character of eleven year old, who lived across the street from her; and
WHEREAS, In an effort to combat the violence affecting the youth in the Roseland community, Lula Mae hosted a STOP THE VIOLENCE video shoot to a song called "Moment of Silence". Her love for God, Family and the Community has been a beacon of light and hope to all; and
WHEREAS, Lula Mae has 5 children, 21 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren. She is a loving mother, cherish friend and good neighbor to all and has enriched the lives of the young and old; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Carrie M. Austin, Alderman of the 34th Ward has apprised this august body of the milestone observance of Lula Mae Washington's golden years; now, therefore,
