RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Reverend Theodore Hesburgh has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 97; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Reverend Theodore Hesburgh served as the President of Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana from 1952 to 1987; and
WHEREAS, During his highly distinguished tenure, the Reverend Theodore Hesburgh built Notre Dame into an academic powerhouse, opened its doors to women and greatly increased both its enrollment and endowment; and
WHEREAS, The Reverend Theodore Hesburgh authored the bestseller book, "God, County, Notre Dame" which laid out his vision for contemporary Catholic education; and
WHEREAS, The Reverend Theodore Hesburgh was a champion of human rights and a founding member of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission; and
WHEREAS, The University of Notre Dame renamed its library in honor of the Reverend Theodore Hesburgh in 1987; and
WHEREAS, The Reverend Theodore Hesburgh was a recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Reverend Theodore Hesburgh serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, The Reverend Theodore Hesburgh will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Reverend Theodore Hesburgh imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eighteenth day of March, 2015, do hereby commemorate the Reverend Theodore Hesburgh for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Reverend Theodore
Hesburgh.
