RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Walter Peterson has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of eighty-eight; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Walter Peterson was the 81st Governor of the State of New Hampshire and the devoted husband of Dorothy, nee Donovan; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Walter Peterson was the much-adored father of Margaret and Andrew to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities which he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Walter Peterson served as the Governor of New Hampshire from 1969 through 1973 and presided over a period of prosperity and economic growth; and
WHEREAS, A distinguished public servant, the Honorable Walter Peterson was widely respected for his collaborative spirit and moderate views; and
WHEREAS, Colleagues of the Honorable Walter Peterson marveled at his strength of character, calling him an example of courage and honesty in the political world; and
WHEREAS, Prior to being elected Governor, the Honorable Walter Peterson served in the New Hampshire State House, rising to the position of Speaker; and
WHEREAS, Following his career in public service, the Honorable Walter Peterson served for two decades as the President of Franklin Pierce College and for a year as the Interim President of the University of New Hampshire; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Walter Peterson will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends, and colleagues; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable Walter Peterson imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixth day of July, 2011, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Walter Peterson for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
