RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Service Club of Chicago, one of the City's oldest philanthropic organizations, celebrates its 125th Anniversary in 2015; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Service Club of Chicago was founded in 1890 by fourteen women of privileged Chicago families whose names were synonymous with Chicago's cultural and industrial elite; and
WHEREAS, Inspired by Jane Addams of Hull House, the founders of the Service Club of Chicago exhibited a strong sense of obligation and determination to personally assist and improve the lives of the less fortunate; and
WHEREAS, Before the turn of the century, fundraising projects of the Service Club of Chicago included bazaars held in the homes of members, sewing for the poor, compiling a cookbook, and a Club Revue that featured the season's debutants and their escorts who performed original skits; and
WHEREAS, Today the Service Club of Chicago raises funds through its sponsorship of dinners, balls, educational tours and the annual "A Day on the Terrace" fashion show; and
WHEREAS, The Service Club of Chicago has offices at 233 East Erie Street and is proud of the tradition that all administrative expenses are supported exclusively by dues which allow for more dollars to be donated to charity; and
WHEREAS, The Service Club of Chicago has operated under the motto that "No one is greater than the service he or she renders the world"; and
WHEREAS, The guiding principles of the Service Club of Chicago are to improve and develop agency programs and to expand facilities; and
WHEREAS, During its long and distinguished history, the Service Club of Chicago has supported more than 300 charitable, educational and civic organizations; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-fourth day of September 2015, do hereby congratulate the Service Club of Chicago on 125 years of...
