Congratulations Extended to Hector Colon
Whereas, Hector Colon, at 69 years old, continues to pursue his desire to learn and grow by attending college courses at Harold Washington College. His 3.80 GPA recently earned him the honors of joining the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, which celebrates superior academic achievement; and
Whereas, Born in Puerto Rico, Hector came to live in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood in the spring of 1959 at the age of 14. After experiencing the tragic loss of his younger sibling, Charlie, he transformed his life from poverty and crime to ministry; and
Whereas, Hector's life journey took him to Pennsylvania where he graduated from Teen Challenge Institute of Missions, then to Charlotte, North Carolina where he was interim pastor for a small immigrant Latino church and then to Anaheim, California where he worked until his retirement. In retirement, Hector has returned to Chicago's Humboldt Park to continue his journey; and
Whereas, He is an inspiration to his family, his professors and fellow students who often seek him out for his wisdom; and,
Whereas, Hector encourages people to pursue their dreams, take risks, and cherish family. He is the proud father of three daughters, one son, and six wonderful grandchildren. He credits his children and grandchildren with inspiring him to go back to school and continue pursuing his dreams in his golden years; and
Whereas, His two younger sisters, and an older brother, all retired, are also supportive and encouraging. He is a true example - that it is never too late to stop learning; and,
Whereas; Hector enjoys reading, sports, listening to classical, jazz, and spiritual music, flying his remote control helicopter in Humboldt Park, attending The Grand Park Music Festival, and family activities. His goal now is to earn enough credits to transfer to a four-year University to prepare himself to make a greater contribution to our society; and
