Recognition extended to Evan Clarke for decisive action
WHEREAS, The quick thinking and decisive actions of doorman Evan Clarke protected the residents of 1255 N. Sandburg Terrace during the early morning hours on Friday, August 2, 2013; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Aldermen Margaret Laurino; and
WHEREAS, Evan Clarke was working the overnight shift as a doorman at a condominium building at 1255 N. Sandburg Terrace, when a young male entered the building's lobby, telling Mr. Clarke that he was being chased. The young man further told Mr. Clarke that he needed to hide in the building, enter the inner lobby, and be allowed to access the upper floors of the condominium building; and
WHEREAS, Without regard to his personal safety, Evan Clarke told the young man that he could not enter the private property, and advised him to immediately leave the premises; and
WHEREAS, Following the young man's departure, Evan Clarke observed four men with clubs and weapons following the young man and called the police; and
WHEREAS, Shortly thereafter, the police arrived and found that a young man had been attacked south of 1255 N. Sandburg Terrace, but did not locate the perpetrators; and
WHEREAS, Several hours later, Evan Clarke observed the same four men circling their vehicle in front ofthe building, whereupon Mr. Clarke went outside in order to monitor the situation. The men pulled up, stopped, looked at Mr. Clarke, then jumped out of the vehicle. The men then mugged two people who walked by the front entrance to the building. Again, Mr. Clarke immediately called the police, but the men scattered before the police arrived; and
WHEREAS, Within 30 minutes, two of the men returned to the circular driveway in front of the condominium building and picked up evidence from the earlier incident. The men then came to the entrance to check out the lobby, only to find Mr. Clarke staring back at them through the window; and
