RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Hattie Burton has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 87; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A woman of dignity, grace and charm, Hattie Burton was a retired Chicago educator and the loving wife of the late Simpson; and
WHEREAS, Hattie Burton was the much-adored mother of Michelle, Shirley, William, Cheryl and Sherri and the grandmother of four to whom she imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that she possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Hattie Burton was the dear sister of Carlean; and
WHEREAS, A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Hattie Burton married her husband in 1951 and the Burtons moved to Chicago in 1958; and
WHEREAS, Hattie Burton taught for 38 years in the Chicago Public Schools and throughout her life stressed the importance of education to her five children who collectively earned five bachelor degrees and nine master's degrees; and
WHEREAS, Following her retirement from the Chicago Public Schools, Hattie Burton co-founded a Special Education Program at the Evangelical Christian School at 91st and Vincennes; and
WHEREAS, Hattie Burton also volunteered as a Senior Reader where she read to children at youth programs; and
WHEREAS, In 2011 Hattie Burton received the Year of the Woman Award from the Black United Fund of Illinois; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Hattie Burton serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Hattie Burton imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirteenth day of December, 2017, do hereby commemorate Hattie Burton for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Hattie Burton.
