RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The American Bar Association and the Section for Individual Rights and Responsibilities will present Thomas P. Sullivan with the 2015 Thurgood Marshall Award in Chicago on August 1, 2015; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this honor by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Established in 1992, the award is named after the late Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall who was an iconic figure and forceful voice for the protection and advancement of individual rights in America; and
WHEREAS, The Thurgood Marshall Award is the only honor bestowed by the American Bar Association recognizing long-term contributions to the furtherance of civil rights, civil liberties and human rights; and
WHEREAS, Thomas P. Sullivan is a widely respected member of Chicago's legal community whose distinguished career as a criminal trial and appellate litigator has spanned more than 55 years; and
WHEREAS, Thomas P. Sullivan joined Jenner & Block in 1954 and has served at the firm throughout his career, except during his tenure as United States District Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois from 1977 to 1981; and
WHEREAS, In 2000 Thomas P. Sullivan was named Co-Chair of Illinois Governor George Ryan's Commission on Capital Punishment and the Illinois General Assembly's Capital Punishment Reform Study Committee; and
WHEREAS, The reports issued by those distinguished panels led to Governor Ryan's decision to clear death row in 2003 and Governor Pat Quinn's bill to abolish Illinois' death penalty in 2010; and
WHEREAS, Thomas P. Sullivan is also an author and lecturer on civil and criminal trial and appellate litigation; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Thomas P. Sullivan serve as an example to all; now, therefore
