RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Shirley Klem has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of eighty-five; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Shirley Klem was a widely admired suburban civic leader and the devoted wife of the late John; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Shirley Klem was the much adored mother of Jonathan and Rebecca and the much-adored grandmother of three; and
WHEREAS, A native of Chicago, the Honorable Shirley Klem graduated from Hyde Park High School and Northwestern University where she met her future husband; and
WHEREAS, In 1953 the couple moved to Oak Park where the Honorable Shirley Klem earned a reputation for her dedication to community involvement; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Shirley Klem ably served as a member of the Oak Park Village Board from 1973 to 1981 and during her esteemed tenure promoted progressive housing practices and encouraged racial diversity; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Shirley Klem was active for many years with the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio in Oak Park and was a generous benefactor of the Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Shirley Klem serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Shirley Klem was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, the Honorable Shirley Klem imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixth day of July, 2011, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Shirley Klem for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
