Memorial Resolution for Sergeant Kent Jacobson
WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that members of this Chamber learned of the death of Kent Jacobson on May 22, 2016 at the age of 86; and
WHEREAS, The City Council was informed of his passing by the Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman of the 39lh Ward; and
WHEREAS, Kent attended Chicago's DePaul Academy High School and became a basketball all-star. His talent and skill as a forward earned him a place on the 1946 Catholic League senior all-star team. Later, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War and served his country with discipline and humility. His athletic ability earned him the opportunity and honor of playing on the Marine Corps' basketball team; and
WHEREAS, In 1954, Kent Jacobson joined the Chicago Police Department. During his 40 year service to the Police Department he achieved the rank of detective and worked in the sex crimes bureau. His devotion to justice led him to catch numerous sex offenders in the city of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, Sgt. Jacobson mentored countless young officers and strongly supported the advancement of women through the police ranks. When dealing with the public, Sgt. Jacobson reminded officers that "not everyone out there is a bad person." He realized people, young or old, make mistakes and should have a second chance. Sgt. Jacobson led by example. In one case, he insisted that a young thief be brought into the station for "a talkin' to." Years later that youth, who became a high school teacher, thanked police and Sgt. Jacobson for scaring him straight; and
WHEREAS, Kent met the love of his life, the late Constance (nee Sullivan), on a blind date and in 1960 were joined together in matrimony. They were blessed with three beautiful children, Carol, Greg and Robin and celebrated over 30 years of marriage until her passing in 1993; and
