RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, John L. Tishman has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 90; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, John L. Tishman was one of the great master builders of the 20th century who headed Tishman Realty and Construction Company founded by his grandfather, Julius, in 1898; and
WHEREAS, Tishman Realty and Construction Company played a major role in shaping the skylines of Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles and New York; and
WHEREAS, John L. Tishman oversaw the construction of three 100-story buildings, including the John Hancock Center in Chicago in 1970 and the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York in 1973; and
WHEREAS, Other major projects completed by John L. Tishman include Walt Disney's EPCOT Center Theme Park in Florida, the Renaissance Center in Detroit and Madison Square Garden in New York; and
WHEREAS, In 2011 as Chairman Emeritus of the company, John L. Tishman authored the book Building Tall: My Life and the Invention of Construction Management; and
WHEREAS, Born in 1926, John L. Tishman attended the University of Michigan where he studied electrical engineering; and
WHEREAS, Prior to joining the family business, John L. Tishman served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and worked as a physics and mathematics teacher; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, vision and dedication of John L. Tishman serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, John L. Tishman was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, John L. Tishman imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixteenth day of March, 2016, do hereby commemorate John L. Tishman for his grace-filled life and do ...
