48TH WARD RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Chicago's independent, locally owned businesses keep wealth circulating in our community, adding to Chicago's economic vitality and resilience; and
WHEREAS, local business owners are stewards of our community, providing quality jobs, engaging in civic concerns, and contributing to local non-profits; and
WHEREAS, independent, locally owned businesses help to sustain vibrant, compact, walkable neighborhood centers that are essential to reducing sprawl, automobile use, habitat loss, and air and water pollution; and
WHEREAS, independent, locally owned businesses are committed to place, contributing to the local economy and responding to the needs of their community over many generations; and
WHEREAS, purchasing from locally owned independent businesses reduces income inequality locally and nationally, and the growing number of made-in-Chicago products creates jobs rooted in our city; and
WHEREAS, Local First Chicago has been promoting and supporting independent, locally owned businesses throughout the city of Chicago for the past 9 years; and
WHEREAS, Local First Chicago is launching is citywide 2014 "Unwrap Chicago" campaign to support community-based buy local campaigns in neighborhoods across Chicago, in collaboration with Neighborhood Business Development Centers and the city's Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection, shifting consumer spending toward Chicago's locally-owned businesses;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, That we the Mayor and members ofthe City Council ofthe City of Chicago, assembled this 8th day of October 2014, do hereby recognize Local First Chicago's "Unwrap Chicago" campaign and its lasting economic impact on the City of Chicago, and encourage citizens of Chicago to support our city's locally owned independent businesses, choosing to strengthen our local economy with every dollar that we spend.
