WHEREAS, the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church of Charleston, South Carolina lost nine beloved members of its family on June 17, 2015, through a violent, hateful act; and
WHEREAS, the family members who lost loved ones in the days following this tragedy came together in an expression of unity and peace; and
WHEREAS, one loved one after another who lost family members that day and thousands of other deeply concerned citizens ofthe Charleston community came forward to express Christian forgiveness;
WHEREAS, the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church family demonstrated to the nation and the world the power of forgiveness, unity and love over divisiveness, anger and violence; and
WHEREAS, the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to those individuals or entities that have " .done the most or best work for peace between nations... and also for the holding and promotion of
peace congresses"; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, that the Chicago City Council and the people ofthe City of Chicago recognize with great admiration and empathy the strength, courage and unity exhibited by the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal church family and present to them this formal expression of that admiration and support, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Chicago City Council and the people ofthe City of Chicago stand with the people and Government of Thornton Township; Cook County, Illinois; Thornton Township Supervisor Frank M. Zuccarelli; and the members of the Thornton Township Board in encouraging the Nobel Peace Prize Committee to consider the people of Charleston for the Nobel Peace Prize.
