RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Reuben L. Hedlund has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 82; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Reuben L. Hedlund was a widely admired civic leader and a former Chairman of the Chicago Plan Commission; and
WHEREAS, A native of Chicago, Reuben L. Hedlund graduated from Denison University and Yale Law School and studied international law at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark; and
WHEREAS, Reuben L. Hedlund returned home to Chicago where he carved out a career as a lawyer specializing in litigation and anti-trust cases; and
WHEREAS, Reuben L. Hedlund was a Partner at Kirkland 8s Ellis where he prevailed in a United States Supreme Court case in which the Justice Department sued his client, General Dynamics, over its acquisition of Material Services; and
WHEREAS, In 1991 Reuben L. Hedlund formed the law firm of Hedlund, Hanley 86 John and in 2009 he joined McGuireWoods where he worked until his retirement in 2014; and
WHEREAS, Following his resignation as Chairman of the Chicago Plan Commission in 1997, Reuben L. Hedlund supported the efforts of the Near North Preservation Council which fought to limit the heights of future Gold Coast buildings; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Reuben L. Hedlund serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Reuben L. Hedlund to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Reuben L. Hedlund will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and neighbors; and
WHEREAS, To his son, Jamie, his daughter, Justine, his sister, Karen and his six grandchildren, Reuben L. Hedlund imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
