TRIBUTE TO SUE ELLA THOMAS

WHEREAS, in His infinite wisdom, almighty God has granted eternal peace to Sue Ella Thomas, a caring daughter, loving wife, beloved mother, doting grandmother, and esteemed great-grandmother, on August 26, 2022; and
WHEREAS Sue Ella started her life's journey on October 16, 1925 as the youngest of four daughters born to Daniel and Gerta Maye who all transitioned before her. She was raised on this city's South Side, attended Betsy Ross Elementary School, graduated from Englewood High School in 1943 and was united in Holy Matrimony to the love ofher life, Isom Thomas, whom she met at a wedding a year earlier when they were both a part of the wedding party; and
WHEREAS, always a dedicated worker, Sue Ella worked in the garment district as a tailor in her early years. Some years later, she graduated from Lydia's School of Beauty Culture and worked in her sister-in-law's hair salon. She furthered her education at Jones Commercial and Olive Harvey College where she majored in Office Administration and went to work at the Cook County Recorder of Deeds Office and the Chicago Public Schools where she retired after 34 years of service; and
WHEREAS the life of Sue Ella Thomas was celebrated on the occasion of her 97th birthday at the Congregational Church of Park Manor was a faithful member for more than 60 years where she served on many committees and received numerous awards. She leaves behind to mourn her loss and cherish her memory her daughters Marcea Daiter, Renee Thomas-Jackson, granddaughter Samira Jackson, and great granddaughters, Mylia, Amira and Amiracle Binion as well as a host of family and friends; and
WHEREAS Sue Ella was a longtime Chatham resident and community activist. For more than 25 years she served as precinct captain for former alderman and mayor Eugene Sawyer. His son, the Honorable Roderick Sawyer, Alderman of the 6lh Ward, has informed this august bod...
