Resolution
WHEREAS, members of the Republican and Democratic congressional delegations have gathered every year in Washington D.C. since 1909 to play a bi-partisan baseball game to benefit charitable causes; and
WHEREAS, the popularity of this annual game has grown and evolved into the Congressional Sports for Charity, a not-for-profit foundation that supports numerous worm causes in the Washington D.C. area and;
WHEREAS, on June 14, 2017, members of the Republican team gathered at a baseball diamond in Alexandria, Virginia for an early morning practice session one day before the scheduled event; and
WHEREAS, a lone gunman, positioned behind the third base dugout, suddenly opened fire on the members of the Congressional team as they were going through their warm-ups on the field; and
WHEREAS, House of Representatives Majority Whip Steven Scalise, a Congressman from the 1st District of Louisiana was struck by a bullet and sustained a serious injury to the hip; and
WHEREAS, Representative Roger Williams from the 25th Congressional District of Texas; lobbyist Matt Mika; Congressional aide Zack Barth; and Officers David Bailey and Crystal Griner assigned to Congressman Steven Scalise' security detail, also sustained gunshot wounds in the attack; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this tragic shooting by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, if not for the swift and decisive response of Officer David Bailey and Officer Crystal Griner of the Capitol Police who returned fire and took down the shooter, it is probable that this incident would have resulted in multiple fatalities; and
WHEREAS, the Capitol Police were formed in 1800 and expanded and formalized in 1828; and
WHEREAS, the Capitol Police employ more than 1,700 officers who patrol the Capitol grounds and provide protective services to high-ranking officials and their families; and
