Resolution Celebrating the Life and Memory of Sharon Eubanks-Pope
Whereas, Sharon Rebecca Gibson Eubanks-Pope, a community leader, mother, and friend, peacefully passed away on December 5th 2022; and
Whereas, the Chicago City Council has been informed of Sharon's passing by Alderman Sophia King, Alderwoman ofthe 4th ward; and
Whereas Sharon Rebecca Gibson Eubanks-Pope was a valued member of our community and made significant contributions as a civil rights activist, teacher, and real estate owner and developer in the 4"' Ward; and
Whereas Sharon was born on August 26, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois, the second youngest of nine children to her parents Thelma and Walter Gibson, who instilled in her the values of faith and hard work; and
Whereas, Sharon was a dedicated property owner, real estate developer and community leader who served the 4th Ward for over 45 years; and
Whereas, Sharon was the owner of Redel Rentals, a real estate business that provided employment opportunities, affordable housing, and mentorship to members ofthe community; and
Whereas, Sharon and her husband Otis were pioneering real estate developers who defied discriminatory redlining practices to acquire and rebuild the fire-damaged Drexel Boulevard building; and
Whereas, Sharon and her husband Otis constructed the first housing development on Drexel Boulevard in over 75 years, kicking off new development projects along the Boulevard; and
Whereas, Sharon dedicated her life to education and economic opportunity, helping to ensure preschool-aged children from low-income backgrounds had a strong start and providing employment opportunities, affordable housing, and mentorship through her real estate business,
Whereas Sharon was a community leader who sat on the Board of the Englewood Urban Progress Center and led a grassroots effort to save three "L" train stops in Englewood. Sharon will forever be remembered for her tireless advocacy for justice, education, and economic opportunity,
