RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of eighty-five; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini was a widely admired religious leader and a former Archbishop of Milan; and
WHEREAS, A native of Italy, Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini entered the Society of Jesus in 1944 and was ordained a priest in 1952; and
WHEREAS, Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini led the Archdiocese of Milan from 1979 to 2002 and was elevated by Pope John Paul II to the cardinalate in 1983; and
WHEREAS, Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini additionally served during his ministry in numerous positions of influence and importance, including Chancellor of the Pontifical University, Relator of the 6th General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops and President of the European Bishops' Conference; and
WHEREAS, An intellectual and a noted biblical scholar, Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini gained prominence for his religious writings and was considered a Papal contender in the last enclave; and
WHEREAS, The holiness, compassion and dedication of Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini serve as an example to all; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twelfth day of September, 2012, do hereby commemorate Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini
