RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Robert Markus has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 81; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Robert Markus was a widely admired member of the journalism community and the loving husband of the late Leslie; and
WHEREAS, Robert Markus was the much-adored father of Mike, Trish and Cathy and the grandfather of two to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, A native of Chicago, Robert Markus graduated from Kelvyn Park High School on the Northwest Side and earned a degree in journalism from the University of Missouri; and
WHEREAS, Robert Markus worked for the Moline Daily Dispatch before joining the Chicago Tribune in 1959; and
WHEREAS, Robert Markus ably served for 37 years as a copy editor, columnist and sports reporter for the Chicago Tribune; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Robert Markus was admired by his colleagues for his speed and accuracy under deadline in the newsroom; and
WHEREAS, Known for his concise and powerful writing style, Robert Markus covered high-profile stories, including the terrorist attack at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich and the legendary tennis match between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King in 1973; and
WHEREAS, In 1984 Robert Markus co-authored "High and Inside," the autobiography of baseball legend Orlando Cepeda and published a collection of his columns in 2011 entitled "I'll Play These."
WHEREAS, The hard work, journalistic talent and dedication of Robert Markus serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Robert Markus to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Robert Markus was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his man...
