Honorary Resolution 9th Annual SEA Blue Prostate Cancer Walk/Run

WHEREAS, Us TOO International is the oldest and largest prostate cancer education and support network in the world and its partner organization The Wellness Place, a recognized regional leader in cancer education and support, are hosting the 9th Annual SEA Blue Prostate Cancer Walk/Run on September 15th in Chicago's beautiful Lincoln Park to raise money and awareness to support prostate cancer patients, survivors and their families in their fight with this deadly disease; and

WHEREAS, Us TOO was founded in 1990 by five Chicago area men who had been diagnosed with and treated for prostate cancer and determined there was no place to go for prostate cancer patients to learn about the most current treatments for the disease or no place to receive the loving care and support so important to men battling this terrible cancer and so established this well respected and internationally known not-for-profit organization to provide those services; and

WHEREAS, The Wellness Place was founded over a decade ago by two Barrington area women as they recovered from breast cancer treatment who envisioned a community-based, non-medical support center in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago where people living with cancer could gather for counseling, education, encouragement and empowerment at no fee; and

WHEREAS, men of all ages need to know the facts about prostate cancer and the risks involved;

One new case occurs every 2.2 minutes
One man dies from prostate cancer every 17.5 minutes
African-American men have the highest incidence rate of prostate cancer
African-American men have a 60% higher chance of developing prostate cancer than white men
