RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Richard Winters has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of ninety-two; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The World War II exploits of Richard Winters were made famous by the book and television mini-series "Band of Brothers"; and
WHEREAS, Known to his family and friends as "Dick," Richard Winters became the leader of Company E, 506th Regiment, 101sl Airborne Division on D-Day, after the company's commander was killed during the invasion of Normandy; and
WHEREAS, Richard Winters and his company of soldiers were the catalyst for several successful invasions and military strongholds during the latter half of the war; and
WHEREAS, Richard Winters continued his military service after the war, training infantry and Army Ranger units during the Korean Conflict; and
WHEREAS, Richard Winters eventually settled with his family in Hershey, Pennsylvania and started an agricultural feed business; and
WHEREAS, Soldiers led by Richard Winters described him as an intelligent, courageous and selfless leader who always took care of his men; and
WHEREAS, Humble and intensely private, Richard Winters was always quick to deny his valiant actions, while simultaneously honoring the men he served with as heroes; and
WHEREAS, To all of his beloved family, Richard Winters imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this ninth day of February, 2011, do hereby commemorate Richard Winters for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Richard Winters.
