RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, The Honorable Jean A. Turnage has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 89; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Jean A. Turnage was a former Chief Justice of the Montana Supreme Court and the loving husband for 62 years of Eula May; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Jean A. Turnage was the much-adored father of Lloyd and Pat, the grandfather of three and the great-grandfather of three to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, The first Native American elected to statewide office in Montana, the Honorable Jean A. Turnage was born in St. Ignatius and raised on his parent's farm; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Jean A. Turnage graduated from Montana State University where he earned his law degree; and

WHEREAS, In 1952 the Honorable Jean A. Turnage entered public service and worked for a decade as Lake County Attorney; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Jean A. Turnage ably served for 22 years as a member of the state legislature and was known as a dedicated lawmaker who was well-liked on both sides of the aisle; and

WHEREAS, In 1983 the Honorable Jean A. Turnage was elected Chief Justice of the Montana Supreme Court where he served with distinction for 16 years before his retirement; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Jean A. Turnage serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared the Honorable Jean A. Turnage to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Jean A. Turnage was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
