RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Harry Nichols served his country with distinction as a member of the United States Army during World War II; and
WHEREAS, A native of Alliance, Ohio, Harry Nichols was the son of Greek immigrants whose parents owned a candy store; and
WHEREAS, Harry Nichols was drafted into the military in 1942 and participated in the third wave of United States forces that stormed the Omaha Beach in Normandy, France on June 6th, 1944; and
WHEREAS, Harry Nichols fought in the battle of St. Lo, the Battle of the Bulge, liberated the French cities of Laval, LeMans, Orleans, and Nance, fought through Luxemburg and Holland and crossed the Rhine River into Germany and up the Elbe River culminating in V-E Day on May 7th , 1945; and
WHEREAS, While Harry Nichols' unit was training for the invasion of Japan, the Japanese surrendered; and
WHEREAS, At age 25, Harry Nichols returned stateside to Columbus, Ohio, where he worked in a bakery; and
WHEREAS, In the late 1940s, Harry Nichols moved to Chicago where he worked in a grocery store, as a waiter and eventually as a florist; and
WHEREAS, Harry Nichols was honored at a special celebration held on the eve of Veteran's Day at Wintrust's Grand Banking Hall, 231 South La Salle Street in Chicago; and
WHEREAS, Harry Nichols is truly an example of what journalist Tom Brokaw called "Our Greatest Generation;" and
WHEREAS, Harry Nichols is exceedingly worthy of our highest admiration and esteem; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eighteenth day of November, 2015 do hereby express our sincere appreciation to Harry Nichols for his military service; and
