RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING GENIE KASTRUP ON BEING SELECTED AS THE FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT IN LOCAL 1'S 100-YEAR HISTORY
WHEREAS, Chicago takes pride ih the fact that this City was not only built, but continues to thrive at the hands of the working class; and
WHEREAS, In 1904, Chicago became home to Local 1, the first founding local ofthe Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which has served as a unified movement towards labor, racial, environmental and immigrant justice across the Midwest; and
WHEREAS, This Women's History Month marks another significant first for SEIU with the selection of Genie Kastrup as the first woman President in Local Ts 100-year history; and
WHEREAS, Motivated by her working class parents and early exposure to the necessary fight for racial justice and dignity, Mrs. Kastrup brings more than 20 years of experience leading efforts instrumental to the powerful and inclusive labor movement known and respected today throughout Chicago and the Nation; and
WHEREAS, She is a seasoned Local 1 trailblazer, known for her prior election as the first woman to the newly created Executive Vice President role after her successful leadership as Vice President and Chief of Staff; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Kastrup's commitment to laborers extends beyond her role as President, she also serves as Vice President ofthe SEIU Illinois State Council, member of SEIU International's Division Labor Board within SEIU's Property Services Division and SEIU International's Together, We Rise/Future Committee; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her time with SEIU and Local 1, Mrs. Kastrup has continued to deliver long-term change through her established dynamic leadership as a labor advocate, workers' rights activist, and political strategist; and
WHEREAS, It is clear that this is only the beginning of Mrs. Kastrup's successes in her charge towards a more powerful, inclusive, and transformational union for members and working class people; an...
