Title: Gratitude extended to Heroes in the 'Hood for community service

RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Heroes in the 'Hood is being honored today, May 23, 2016 in the 20in Ward; and

WHEREAS, a partnership has been formed between GO Airport Express, Chicago Crusader and DuSable Museum of Afro American History at the DuSable Museum; and

WHEREAS, Heroes in the 'Hood has recognized and rewarded outstanding teens from economically disadvantaged neighborhoods for their vision, work ethic, volunteerism, academic performance and being examples for others; and

WHEREAS, the partnership of GO Airport Express, Chicago Crusader and DuSable Museum, added a new award called "Stop the Violence" which acknowledges a principal, teacher, counselor or community leader who has made an extraordinary effort to promote non-violence through an organization-based program, contributions, mentoring and role modeling; and

WHEREAS, since the program's inception, over 1000 teen and adults have been recognized and awarded for their contributions locally like those being honored today; and

WHEREAS, over the years there have been a wide range of topics that awardees have concentrated on from volunteering and mentoring younger children, helping to feed and clothe the homeless, organizing peace walks, raising money to provide clean drinking water to African countries ~ to launching national conversations on social media platforms to educate, prevent and engage people about warning signs of teen dating violence and providing available resources for victims; and

WHEREAS, Dorothy Leavell Publisher of Crusader newspaper based in Chicago, IL and Gary, IN, John McCarthy President of GO Airport Express and Perri Irmer President and CEO of DuSable Museum of Afro American History are truly appreciated for the partnership and efforts toward Heroes in the 'Hood; and

WHEREAS, through their recognition for the good that people do, who's mission proves to be a powerful catalyst to people and organizations everywhere; therefore
